With the constant bombardment of texts, phone calls and other distractions in daily life, it can be really difficult to stay focused. Meditation is one of the most effective and beneficial practices that you can add to your daily life.

A growing body of research has found that it offers numerous health benefits, including improved anxiety, fatigue, and memory. So, how can you meditate if you cannot quiet your overstressed mind?

#1 Make Sure That You Are Wearing Comfortable Clothes

There is nothing worse than being distracted by how uncomfortable your clothing feels. Put on something comfortable before beginning your practice. Soft, loose clothing are best for meditation.

#2 Find a Quiet Place to Relax

Finding a quiet, comfortable space to meditate is vital. Choose a corner, room or anyplace where you will not be disturbed. Make sure that it is quiet and not too light or dark. The space should be free of clutter, as too many objects will only serve to distract you. If you like aromatherapy or candles, you can use those to create a peaceful atmosphere.

#3 Get in a Comfortable Position

When most picture someone practicing meditation, they imagine them in the lotus asana. This position, a cross-legged sitting asana, is the classic meditation pose. But, it is not for everyone. Some beginners have a very difficult time sitting comfortably in this position. If it is not a comfortable position for you, sit in whatever way is comfortable for you. Being in a comfortable position will help you focus better as you will not be distracted with pain or tension during your meditation.

    #4 Cultivate Thankfulness

A great way to start your meditation is by thinking of all that you are thankful for. Spend the first couple minutes of your meditation giving thanks. Gratitude helps connect you to others and promotes feelings of peace and happiness. Many people have a difficult time with the mind wandering back to the past or forward to the future. Gratitude helps connect you to all of the things that you have to be thankful for in the present moment.
