“Seva is selfless service, an offering we give to the Divine. Seva is a pure expression of gratitude with no thought of receiving anything in return. Seva opens the hearts of those we serve as well as our own.”
Seva is one of the most profound ways we can put our yoga into action. Small acts of selfless kindness allow us to contribute in a small way to healing the world. Planting seeds of kindness and watering them with love, intention and practice eventually creates a beautiful garden.
As we serve others we form a path toward self realization which ultimately is yoga. We not only impact the people we are helping but also experience internal transformation. Seva is not one day, one action. The more we practice it, the more it interweaves into our lifestyle and we act out of a place of compassion and freedom.
There are many ways to bow to the divine in all people. Offer to fix your partner or child dinner when they are hungry, making a phone call to a friend in need of support, spending time with a child whose parents have no time during the day or spending time with an elderly neighbor who only has time during the day. A selfless act can be as simple as offering someone to go ahead in line at the grocery store or holding someone’s grocery bag who is struggling to find their keys way down at the bottom of their bag! Seva is consciousness that influences our habits and actions, putting the interests of others before our own. Living in this way allows us to experience the infinite joy that is ever present but perhaps not so apparent in our modern lifestyle. Our actions stem from a place of love and gratitude for all people and things!
“When you surrender completely to God, as the only truth worth having, you find yourself in service of all that exists. It becomes your joy and recreation. You never tire of serving others.”
Mahatma Gandhi
